Adolescent Psychology
Adolescence is a unique and important stage of development that bridges the transition from childhood to adulthood. During this time, young people undergo significant physical, emotional, social, and cognitive changes. These changes can sometimes feel overwhelming and may bring about challenges with identity, relationships, school, and mental health.
At Logic Lounge Psychology, we understand that every adolescent’s journey is different. Our psychologists provide evidence-based and compassionate care to support young people as they navigate these formative years.
Understanding Adolescence
Adolescence is typically characterised by:
-
Identity formation – developing a sense of self, values, and independence.
-
Emotional development – experiencing more intense emotions and learning to regulate them.
-
Cognitive growth – developing advanced thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
-
Social changes – navigating friendships, peer influence, and family dynamics.
While many adolescents adapt well, some may experience difficulties such as stress, anxiety, low mood, or struggles with self-esteem. Early support from a qualified psychologist can make a significant difference in wellbeing and resilience.

Anxiety, stress, or low mood

Assessments we provide include:
-
WISC-V – measuring intellectual ability in children and adolescents.
-
WIAT-III – assessing academic achievement.
-
WAIS-IV – suitable for older adolescents and young adults.
-
WPPSI-IV – used with younger children for early developmental insights.
These assessments can provide valuable guidance for educational planning and personal development.

Frequently asked questions
When should my adolescent see a psychologist?
It may be helpful to seek support if your adolescent is experiencing ongoing stress, anxiety, low mood, difficulty at school, challenges with friends or family, or changes in behaviour that are affecting their daily life.
Can I see a psychologist online?
Yes. We offer secure telehealth (video call & phone call) appointments.
Do I need a referral?
Yes. A GP referral is required, especially if you want to claim your Medicare rebate.
However, if you are seeking support privately and are happy to pay the full fee yourself (without claiming Medicare), you do not need a referral.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your goals and needs. Your practitioner will discuss a plan after the first appointment or initial consultation.
Do parents or carers attend the sessions?
This depends on the adolescent’s age, needs, and preferences. Sometimes sessions are with the adolescent only, sometimes with the family, and often a combination of both. Your psychologist will discuss the most appropriate approach with you.
What types of assessments are available for adolescents?
We offer a range of psychological assessments to help better understand an adolescent’s cognitive, emotional, or learning needs. These include the WISC-V, WIAT-III, WAIS-IV, and WPPSI-IV.
What if I’m unsure about starting?
If you’re uncertain whether an assessment or therapy is right for you, an initial consultation can help you explore your options without committing to a full process.
How do I book an appointment?
You can contact our team directly or call us on 02 7256 7070 to arrange an appointment. If you have a referral from your GP, your adolescent may also be eligible for Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan.
